An Interesting Case Of Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis

    Get PDF
Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an uncommon inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. The disease typically occurs after infections or vaccinations. However, in many patients with ADEM, no evidence of prior infection or vaccination can be found. We are reporting a patient who developed clinical and radiological features of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis after trauma of repeated attempts at lumber puncture for spinal anesthesi

An interesting case of suicidal poisoning

Aconite is one of the most poisonous known herbs. It has been known to be used as a homicidal poison from long time in history. However this is rarely known to be used as suicidal poison. Poisoning with aconite is usually fatal and death commonly occurs due to arrhythmias and cardiotoxicity. We report a case of attempted suicidal poisoning by aconite where patient survived in spite of documented cardiotoxic effects of the poison

SME Access to Finance: An exploration into the demand and supply contraints around SME access to finance

    Get PDF
In March 2011, the Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University was commissioned by North East Access to Finance (NEA2F) to undertake a major piece of independent academic research to explore both the demand and supply sides of SME access to finance in the North East of England. The aim of the research was to gain insight and understanding into the challenges faced not only by the SME sector but also by the key suppliers of finance to that community, specifically the banking sector and Business Angels. Thus we do not take a position on what we think is right or what a best practice approach might be but rather reflect, as accurately as possible, the information that was shared with us. The research project commenced in May 2011 and was completed at the end of March 2012

Banks, non-bank companies and stock exchange: do we know the relationship?

This paper investigates the role played by the banking sector in founding, sustaining and developing stock exchange markets. The paper has constructed data on market capitalisation separately for banks and non-bank companies. We apply cointegration techniques developed by Engle and Granger [1987] and Johansen [1988] and we bootstrap the variables to examine the nature of relationship between the banks and stock markets. We found that banks have played an important role in the development of stock exchanges. Further, the empirical analysis made amongst ten developed and developing exchanges suggests a listing of non-bank companies important for development of stock markets. These findings have also been verified by analysing the data of an exchange not included in the test

Consumer credit scoring : an empirical study involving home loans within the Nepalese banking sector

Nepalese banks have witnessed a considerable shift in recent years towards its loans and advances by focussing on consumer credit. The traditional method of evaluating applicants that is based on the judgmental system is increasingly becoming inappropriate for the large volume of applicants. As a result of the shift in the lending market and the increased emphasis placed by the regulator on risk management, Nepalese banks have to rethinking on the way they assess their applicants for credit. Traditionally, the credit decision whether to accept/reject an applicant has been based on the subjective evaluation of the credit application forms and supporting documents. The literature advocates an objective approach on the lines of credit scoring which is fast, reliable, consistent and risk-based. On the strengths of this argument, this thesis presents the qualitative and quantitative considerations including issues relating to data capture, model development and implementation of a formal credit scoring model within the Nepalese Banking sector. The questionnaire was administered with the non-managerial level staff, the respondents in the expert interviews were managerial level staff and the database for model development were taken from a home loans customer database of a typical Nepalese bank. The findings of this work point to the fact that it is possible to develop such an objective model using six key characteristics and jointly produce a model that will predict the quality of loan with an acceptable degree of confidence

Genotype × Environment Interaction and Phenotypic Stability analysis of Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) in Mid-Hills of North-West Himalayas

Stability performance of 30 linseed genotypes including commercial cultivars and elite lines (indigenous and exotic) was compared by using regression on environmental means for grain yield and its components under 5 different environments during rabi 2013-2014. Significant differences were observed among the genotypes for all the traits studied over all 5 individual environments. Genotype × environment interactions were highly significant for all the characters studied. E + (G × E) was significant for all the characters except the number of seeds per capsule. Mean sum of squares for environment (linear) showed significance for all the characters. Significant differences for G × E (linear) were observed for 5 traits viz., primary branches per plant, secondary branches per plant, aerial biomass yield per plant, seed yield per plant and 1000-seed weight. Based on mean performance, regression coefficient (bi) and deviation from regression (S2di) the genotype Him Alsi-2, KL-241 and Nagarkot was highly stable for seed yield (g) and number of capsules per plant was found most adaptive to overall environments. These promising genotypes may be utilized as donors in linseed improvement program for target ecosystems

Recent Advances in Antimalarial Drug Discovery — Challenges and Opportunities

    Get PDF
Malaria drug discovery is a challenging and difficult task due to the unavailability of the vaccine and lack of newer drugs. The most potent artemisinin and its derivatives, widely used in combination therapies for curing malaria worldwide are also now falling to resistance in some parts of the world. Thus, to combat malaria, new drugs possessing high therapeutic value, minimal toxicity, rapid efficacy and low cost are urgently needed. In this chapter, we will provide an integrated overview on the challenges and opportunities in malaria drug discovery with more emphasis on synthesis of peroxidic antimalarials

Improving the Performance of Heterogeneous Hadoop Clusters Using Map Reduce

The key issue that emerges because of the tremendous development of connectivity among devices and frameworks is making such a great amount of data at an exponential rate that an achievable answer for preparing it is getting to be troublesome step by step. Thusly, building up a stage for such propelled dimension of data handling, equipment just as programming improvements should be led to come in level with such generous data. To enhance the proficiency of Hadoop bunches in putting away and dissecting big data, we have proposed an algorithmic methodology that will provide food the necessities of heterogeneous data put away .over Hadoop groups and enhance the execution just as effectiveness. The proposed paper intends to discover the adequacy of new calculation, correlation, proposals, and an aggressive way to deal with discover the best answer for enhancing the big data situation. The Map Reduce method from Hadoop will help in keeping up a nearby watch over the unstructured or heterogeneous Hadoop bunches with bits of knowledge on results obviously from the algorithm.in this paper we proposed new Generating another calculation to tackle these issues for the business just as non-business uses can help the advancement of network. The proposed calculation can help enhance the situation of data ordering calculation MapReduce in heterogeneous Hadoop groups. The exposition work and analyses directed under this work have copied very amazing outcomes, some of them being the selection of schedulers to plan employments, arrangement of data in similitude lattice, bunching before planning inquiries and in addition, iterative, mapping and diminishing and restricting the inner conditions together to stay away from question slowing down and execution times. The test led additionally sets up the way that if a procedure is characterized to deal with the diverse use case situations, one could generally lessen the expense of processing and can profit on depending on disseminated frameworks for quick executions
